Do you see that light ribbon peaking through the reveal between the steel plate pan and gypsum board wall? Naturally lit by the glass curtain wall to the east, this effect was the aim of the Hutton stair project. Steel, wood, and light interacting in a waltz, kept by the time of the sun. A collaborative work between Hutton and Ten Works, this artful staircase is a true feat of design, engineering, and beauty.

Hutton Headquarters

  • Channel, rod, and plate steel stairs and railing structure

    Douglas Fir treads and handrail

  • Supporting the staircase is a massive 10”x8”x5/8” thick steel tube, precisely angled to the exact decimal specified by the 3D scan of the building.

The stair pans, made from ½” plate, join the Douglas fir treads to create a symphony of materials.

Rod railing vertical supports were machined on our Haas Mill, allowing for perfect parallelism of the tensions 5/16” rods.
